Makan is an Independent Studies student who is also pursuing an honours degree in Environment and Resource Studies. In his IS thesis, Makan intends to explore the development and well-being of children through psychological analysis.
Makan’s achievements are evident with the winning group performance at the Industrial Accident Prevention Association Conference and with the awarding of the Unilever’s Scholarship with his essay, “Vision for Sustainability.” He has also worked as research assistant for Development Applications and in the Policy Division at Windsor’s Planning Department. Additionally, Makan has volunteered at the Toronto International Film Festival providing administrative assistance as well as assistance to press and industry delegates.
Makan describes his appreciation of Independent Studies:
“The Independent Studies program provides one with the opportunity to delve into a matter that is specific or interdisciplinary. An interdisciplinary approach often requires a holistic method, and so Independent Studies is a suitable program for those who intend to explore my interdisciplinary matters. It is such a comprehensive program: I can take on-campus courses from different departments as well as make use of Independent Studies courses to concentrate on my area of interest.”
Makan intends to pursue graduate studies in clinical psychology.

Figure 1 – Illustrates a daycare next to property that has been designated industrial. This property should, perhaps, be designated as sensitive land use because of the potential industry levels of lead, for instance, on the industrial site, which could have psychological impacts (behaviour and learning) on the children using the property beside it.
