September 2003 marked a greatly anticipated return to academic pursuits for David. He says the IS program provided the muchly-needed flexibility for him as a mature student. The unique combination of course options, scheduling, and the ability to do real research have all been a huge plus for Dave. David continues ...
"The broad theme for my program has been that of ethics and technology here in Canada. During my coursework phase, I had the pleasure of working with Anne Dagg and was able to explore many diverse topics. These included Canada's social history, Native perspectives, military ethics, economic development, philosophy, moral and ethical theories, ideologies, technology related public policy and legal issues, and a wide variety of scientific developments. I am currently in the middle of my thesis phase, which is focused on specific issues in biotechnology in the areas of forestry, aquaculture and bioremediation. My supervisors are Christine Dupont in Biology and David Seljak from St. Jeromes.
My current position here at UW is in the IST department where I serve as the Director Information Systems (Academic Support and Ancillaries). I work closely with such departments as the Library, Cooperative Education and Career Services, Development and Alumni Affairs, Housing, Graphics, Bookstore, Plant Operations and many others. Originally from Windsor, I came to Waterloo in 1978 to earn my Bachelors in Chemical Engineering and Management Sciences, and have remained since. Education is certainly a family affair. My wife recently completed her MEd at Western. I have two sons, both at UW, one entering his final year in Political Science, the other begins his third year in Geography this fall.
Independent Studies is definitely unique, with opportunities well worth exploring. It allows students to draw from all of the academic resources available within faculties and services across campus. While flexible, IS follows the same academic rigor - and more! - of other programs. It combines the best of what UW has to offer."
