Those who are acquainted with IS know that the Independent Studies program offers a non-traditional approach to education for the non-traditional student. IS is a unique and highly focused program not intended for everyone but intended for those who have the dexterity either to ‘live on the edge’ or ‘outside the box.’
You can help IS with your continued involvement, especially as an alumnus or alumna.
• Consider sharing your expertise by being an IS resource for a student.
• Contribute to the web site with your stories of adventure out there on the edge.
• Be a presenter at one of the scheduled times, telling us about your field and where your IS experience has taken you. (See http://is.uwaterloo.ca/events.htm for details)
• Form an IS Alumni/Alumnae Association
• Donate to the Independent Studies Senate Scholarship fund
Our scholarship fund has been established to assist thesis project students with their research and final project development. In the past few years, ISers have travelled throughout Ontario and Canada, and as far away as Kenya, the Sudan, and Benin, Africa, to further their research. Graduates have gone on to work and continue studies in eastern and western Canada, in the U.S., and teaching English abroad. ISers and BISers are routinely on the move!
• Tell your associates in your networks about IS
We need to let others know how they can discover the rewards of self-directed research and cultivating the skills for critical analysis. Several BISers have stated that they only want to hire those who have their undergraduate experience within IS because of the risk-taking and daring that is evident in graduates, for the organizational capability learned, the self-discipline practised, and the resourcefulness that is fostered by this unique program.
Many believe that the university experience needs to change dramatically in the next few years to accommodate the coming world-wide needs and focus, and to provide an advanced leadership now being defined. We anticipate that studying in IS is the ticket for those world-wide adventures, where key educational traditions are maintained and new approaches are embraced for the coming new world.
With your contributions, Independent Studies can secure its position as a flagship program for the University of Waterloo, and, IS graduates will indeed be those sought-after, leading-edge thinkers, and risk-taking doers. We "talk-the-talk" and "walk-the-walk."
Should you wish make a financial contribution to Independent Studies, be sure to identifyquite specifically the area of the Independent Studies program to which you want your funds committed.
